ZUBEROA (MONUMENTAL HERITAGE)

Their chapitels.

What makes Santa Engracia a unique monument are its 25 sculpted chapitels, including a dozen ornate chapitels. As usual, numerous scenes from the Bible are represented in stone. Under the chapitels, we discover Creation and Redemption, Adam and Eve, the Shepherds guided by the Star, the Resurrection; there are hunting scenes with centaurs, dancers and musicians, monsters devouring a man, and one scene even evokes the amorous frolics of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. This last chapitel is picturesque, with its elephant crowned by a tower, sticking out an enormous tongue that represents its trunk.
