ZUBEROA (MONUMENTAL HERITAGE)

From Orthez and Navarrenx to Ostabat.

Before regrouping in Ostabat, the pilgrims met in Sorde-l'Abbaye, in Gascony, Orthez and Navarrenx in B arn, or in Maulon. Only the first avoided Zuberoa; the others made a halt in it. The itinerary from Orthez to Ostabat passed through Osserain in Zuberoa, where pilgrims crossed the bridge and found the priory-hospital of Navarrenx-Sainte-Madeleine, the first link in the hospital chain in the Basque Country. The road from Navarrenx to Ostabat crossed the Saison at Charre, where there was a ford in front of Mongaston Castle. There was also a pontoon for the passage of the river and a bridge in Lichos. The path entered Zuberoa through Aroue, the first Basque town that the pilgrim found, and whose church of Saint-Etienne dates from the s. XII. This was remodeled in 1861, but retains the lintel and imposts of the old Romanesque portico (Colas, 1923). The path continues through Olh iby and Lohitzun, with both partly Romanesque churches. Navarrenx and Maul on we also find the chapel of Laruns in Berrogain-Laruns. It is a small Romanesque building, very simple, isolated on a hill, not far from the castle. Of about 15 m. long, it only includes a rectangular piece ending in a semicircle with two flared holes, semicircular like the door. It is a modest but well preserved building.
