ZUBEROA (MONUMENTAL HERITAGE)

Romanesque churches in Zuberoa.

Most of the Romanesque churches in the Northern Basque Country, and the most notable, are in Zuberoa. It can also be seen that, going from East to West, from the Baron to the Coast, their number decreases: numerous in Zuberoa, they are almost non-existent in Laburdi. These churches are late, as has undoubtedly been the Christianization of the country, and even the most notable, such as Sainte-Engréce and L'Hépital-Saint-Blaise, belong to the second century. half of the s. XII. Although they were numerous, many were destroyed during the religious wars and, among those that remain, most have been remodeled. The Camino de Santiago was fundamental; Of the four paths described in the "Pilgrim's Guide", three led to Ostabat, where the pilgrims regrouped before crossing the Pyrenees. The first group of Romanesque religious buildings in Zuberoa is found precisely on the roads that lead to Ostabat and have been meticulously inventoried by Dr. Urrutib h ty (1965).
