Hondarribia (2003 version)

Formerly known as Fuenterrabía. City and municipality in Gipuzkoa that adopted its current name by resolution on 15 May 1980 (Official Bulletin of the Basque Country, 11 May 1981, and Official State Gazette, 22 April 1989), located in the northeast of the province, opposite Hendaye in Labourd.

Its territory is watered to the southeast by the Jaizubia canal, with the city situated on the eastern side of the municipality, on a plain near the mouth of the Bidasoa River into the Cantabrian Sea. Rolling terrain reaching its highest point at Mount Jaizkibel, almost entirely within Hondarribia. The geographical coordinates of the urban center are 1° 53’ 45’’ longitude and 43° 21’ 40’’ latitude (Madrid Meridian). It borders the Cantabrian Sea to the north, the municipality of Irún to the south, Lezo and Pasajes to the west, and Hendaye to the east. High tide fills several canals that serve the lands near the river. Also notable is the Urdanibia River, crossed by the Amute Bridge, along with smaller streams: Txurruta, Txori, and Grazia.
