On 29 October 1353, a treaty of peace and perpetual friendship was concluded the commissioners of Bayonne, Biarritz, San Sebastián, Getaria, Motrico, Laredo and Castro, with the aim of consolidating peace among the ports of the Bay of Biscay. On 21 December, at the same location (the church of Santa María), another peace treaty was signed the representatives of Bayonne and Biarritz and the Biscayan towns of Plentzia, Bilbao, Lekeitio and Ondarroa.
