War of the Normans and the Bayonnais, 1293–1303. In 1297, the major coastal towns from Fuenterrabía to San Vicente de la Barquera met in Castro Urdiales to agree on the stance they would take regarding the war that had broken out in 1293 the Bayonnais and the Normans, the former supported by the English, the latter by the French and Navarrese. Joan I of Navarre (1274–1305) communicated to them, through her husband Philip the Fair, her version of the events. See BAYONNE.
