Hondarribia

Fontarabía has a very old rowing tradition. As early as 1891, two Hondarribian boats took the top positions in a regatta held in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The first time a Fontarabía boat competed in La Concha was in 1920. The trainera "Ama Guadalupekoa" finished a modest fourth out of five, less than a minute behind the winner, Pasajes de San Juan. The following year, it returned: seven participants, with the "Ondarrabitarra" in sixth place. In 1922, it improved by one place, with the same number of boats. After a few years of absence, in 1925 it competed in the honor regatta in Orio and lost by 17 seconds. Again in 1926 at La Concha, but this time with two traineras: the "Virgen del Mar" placed third and the "Ondarrabitarra" fourth out of seven. Third out of six in 1927, and in 1928, among six again, it played the final against S. Pedro. But the Pasaitarras, aboard "Ama Guadalupekoa," won the flag.

Fontarabía did not compete again until 1932, taking part in the honor regatta and finishing second among four boats. The following year the story ed. In 1934 and 1935, there were two crews: sea and land. The "land" crews finished second both times in the honor regatta.

Fontarabía’s truly brilliant performance began in 1941, winning the flag, followed by victories in 1943, 1947, and 1948. In 1947 and 1948, Bernardo Elduayen captained the trainera, bringing the green colors to victory once again at La Concha. In 1949, also at La Concha, they placed fourth. The club became discouraged, and there was no crew the following year. 1951: second behind Orio; 1952: did not participate; 1953: third behind Orio and Pasajes de San Juan; 1954-1955: did not participate; 1956: fourth out of five; 1957-1961: absent from competitions; 1962: fifth out of six traineras; 1963: third out of three; 1964: second behind Orio out of six; 1965: winner at La Concha and winner against Pedreña in the so-called "Cantabrian Challenge"; 1966: winner at La Concha, second in Bilbao behind Pedreña, winner of the open-sea regatta from Pasajes to San Sebastián; 1967: first at La Concha and Bilbao; 1968: continued victories in San Sebastián and Bilbao; 1969: after four years of wins, physical decline, fifth in San Sebastián and third in Bilbao; 1970: disqualified at La Concha, sixth in Bilbao (Ref. In recent years, the club "Hondarribi" with its trainera Ama-Guadalupekoa has achieved numerous successes. In 1980 it won the Grand Prix of Biscay, five second places, and two thirds. The crew is trained by Fermín Altuna and presided over by Miguel Bernedo Ansótegui, who in 1981 began preparing a new proper pavilion, with a crew of 80 rowers, the oldest being Jon Querejeta Bera. Average age in 1981: 25.6 years.
