ZUBEROA (MONUMENTAL HERITAGE)

Hospital orders.

In Zuberoa, a large number of hospitals belonged to the regular canons of San Agustn; Thus Santa Engracia depended on the canons of the Abbey of Leire de Navarra, L'Hôpital-Saint-Blaise depended on the Augustinians of Santa Cristina, at the foot of Somport, and the Ordiarp charge of the Augustinians of Roncesvalles. Also the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, later called the Knights of Rhodes, after Malta, created parcels in the Basque Country to welcome pilgrims; San Juan de Berraute was one of them. Other priories depended on the Premostratensians, such as that of Pagolle, or the Benedictines, such as that of Larrau, which depended on the Sauvelade abbey. Other communities were created, such as that of the donatos, that is, people who consecrated themselves to God and pilgrims, such as that of Ainharp.
