ZUBEROA (MONUMENTAL HERITAGE)

II - PALACES AND CASTLES.

The oldest and most imposing is the fortified castle of Maulon. Former residence of the viscounts of Zuberoa, later it was the residence of the Castilian-captains, governors of Zuberoa. A beautiful example of medieval military architecture, it experienced various vicissitudes, it was partly destroyed by order of Louis XIII (1642), and rebuilt at the expense of the Suletin in 1648. Shortly after, in the 16C style. XVII, the Palace of the Governors was built, then the sub-prefecture and today the Town Hall of the town of Maulon. Two other castles are classified or registered in the inventory of Historical Monuments. They are the castle of Urrutia or Ruthie de Aussurucq and the palace of Maytie in Maulon. The first, endowed with two towers from the s. In the 15th century, it was the birthplace of Pierre de Ruthie, governor of Zuberoa, and his nephew Bernard, grand chaplain of France, advisor to Francisco I. The Maytie palace, in Renaissance style, dates from the late s. XVI. Three bishops of Olor n come from this family to which they gave luster: Arnaud Arnaud II and Arnaud III de Maytie. Also noteworthy is the Troisvilles palace, built from 1660 to 1663, according to the plans of the architect Mansart in the purest Louis XIII style, for the captain of the Tr ville musketeers, immortalized by Alexandre Dumas. Mention may also be made of the palace of Bert r che de Menditte, archetypal of the Suletin noble house. Two other buildings should be mentioned, more for the importance of the families that lived in them than for their architectural interest: Chraute and Charritte. The first is that of the B la, the house that gave Zuberoa historians, lawmen and illustrious soldiers. The second is that of a family of presidents of the Parliament of Navarra, of governors of the colonies, of sailors and of the military. Quite a few old houses could also be mentioned. Let us not forget the charming historic castle of Ahetzia in Ordiarp, that of Ithorots, the Goyhenetchea manor house in Moncayolle, Matalas's birthplace, the Gentein mansion in Ordiarp, where he was imprisoned before being uted, the Joantho manor house in Aroue, of the s. XVIII. All that remains of the medieval castle of Domezain is the huge square tower that serves as the bell tower of the church. In Osserain there is still a house from the s. XIV called the Prior and a mansion from the XVII.
