ZUBEROA (MONUMENTAL HERITAGE)

Santa Engracia and Leire.

In 1085, Sancho I, King of Aragón and Pamplona, donated the monasteries of Sainte-Engréce-du-Port to that of San Salvador de Leire. This was one of the most famous monasteries of the Middle Ages. (See LEIRE) . The canons of Santa Engracia paid a canon to this monastery; It consisted, first, of two salmon and a pair of oxen. Then, after an agreement, it was reduced to a single salmon, but excellent, as specified; its length was recorded in the portico of Leire. Later, the tribute was further reduced, to a modest sum of money.
