London 1948. Only half a dozen men make up the Basque team, all of them from this side of the border, at the London Olympics, full of post-war reminiscences. There were three athletes, Juan Bautista Adarraga, Pedro Apellániz and Félix Erausquin; two boxers, Agustín Argote and Alejandro Arteche; and one hockey player, Juan del Campo. Adarraga, from the dynasty of great athletes from Hernani, came seventh in the third heat of the first round of the 800 metres, with an unofficial time of 1:55.7. We have our doubts as to whether he also ran the 1,500 metres, but in any case he was unable to progress. Pedro Apellániz threw the javelin 54.93 metres, which was of no use to him, while Félix Erausquin had similar luck in the discus, with 43.67 metres. However, we must mention the latter, a great athlete from Ceánuri, who adapted the technique of the Basque bar throw, that is, spinning, to the javelin, a with which he smashed all records. However, the International Federation did not approve this technique, which Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo, the famous television reporter, made known back in 1956 in Paris, not long before the Melbourne Olympics. As for the boxers, we only know that they competed, with no further details about their performance, which in any case must not have been very impressive. Nor was that of the Spanish field hockey team, which included Juan del Campo. After the second London Olympics, there was another hiatus for our athletes, who did not attend Helsinki (1952) or Melbourne (1956), in the latter case, as far as the Spanish team was concerned, due to the partial boycott motivated by the Soviet intervention in Hungary.
