Olympic Games

Munich 1972. In Munich (1972), participation was reduced to eight members, four in field hockey: Josetxo Alústiza, Alberto Carrera, Rafael Camiña and Agustín Churruca. One cyclist, Javier Elorriaga. One handball player, Santos Labaca, and one representative in Olympic shooting, Miguel Marina. Of these, the most outstanding was undoubtedly Alberto Carrera, goalkeeper for the Spanish national team, who would later be called up for a world team. The team itself achieved a modest seventh place. Miguel Marina ranked eleventh in skeet shooting and Javier Elorriaga ranked sixteenth in the road race. Sarría, who had the minimum qualifying time in the 200 metres, inexplicably did not run in that event. He did, however, run in the 4 x 100 relay, with Sánchez Paraíso and Carballo, among others. In a race that was on course for a medal, a rash move by the latter caused him to stray from the relay zone, thus missing a great opportunity. Years later, Juan José Prado, in Los Angeles, and Valentín Rocandio, in Seoul, would have similar negative experiences in relay events, as we shall see later. Finally, Santos Labaca was part of the Spanish handball team's Olympic debut, which was rather unfortunate: they came second to last, ahead of only Tunisia.
