Olympic Games

Tokyo 1964. Eleven Basques competed in the Tokyo Olympics (1964). The athletes (3) were Luis Felipe Areta, Fernando Aguilar and Ignacio Sola; the cyclists (3) were R. Goyeneche, José Manuel Lasa and Luis Pedro Santamaría; the field hockey players were Julio Solaun and Luis Mari Usoz; the boxer was Agustín Senín; the sailor was Juan Olábarri; and the swimmer was José Miguel Espinosa. The most notable performance was by Luis Felipe Areta, who came sixth in the long jump with 7.34 metres in the final after jumping 7.46 metres in the qualifying rounds. In the triple jump, which was his speciality, he failed to reach the final. Fernando Aguilar, who was well placed, inexplicably withdrew from the 5,000 metres race halfway through. He was 12th in the second 10,000-metre heat, also failing to qualify. Ignacio Sola, meanwhile, reached the final after clearing 4.60 metres in the first round. He then had to settle for 4.40 metres, as the bar had moved, although without falling, at 4.60 metres. He finished in 15th place. In field hockey, Spain came close to winning the bronze medal, losing to Australia (3-2) after losing to Pakistan (3-0) in the semi-finals. The rest of the performances were unremarkable, except for Senin's tough boxing match against Italy's Zurlo, who won on points.
