Olympic Games

Amsterdam 1928. Amsterdam broke the record for Basque participants in the games, excluding pelota exhibitions. There were 26 athletes, all of them flying the Spanish flag: 19 footballers, five track and field athletes and two field hockey players. The football team is a genuine Basque selection. All the men in the line-up, 15 in total, and four of the substitutes, make up the Basque Country team. However, their performance was once again rather fleeting. It was Italy who once again blocked the Basque team's path, although the Italians went on to win the bronze medal. The debut was promising, with a 7-1 win over Mexico, in which Yermo scored four goals. Then came a draw with Italy (1-1), with a goal from Zaldúa. And a resounding 1-7 defeat in the play-off against the Italians. The core of that team, which was entirely amateur at a time when professionalism was beginning to take hold in Spain, had to be the legendary Real Sociedad team that played in the three Spanish Cup finals against Barcelona in Santander. In the third and final match, played just after their return from the Olympics, the San Sebastian team ed signs of physical exhaustion, which the Catalan professionals took advantage of to win 3-1. In athletics, Diego Ordóñez made his third appearance at the Games at the age of 24. Alongside him were Arturo Peña, Fernando Labourdette, Fernando Muñagorri and Jesús Oyarbide. Ordóñez came fourth in the fourth heat of the 100 metres and fifth in the first heat of the 200 metres, being eliminated in both events. Arturo Peña came seventh in his 5,000 metres heat; Labourdette, who competed in the long jump despite being a 400 metres specialist, recorded a jump of 6.52 metres, but failed to qualify for the final; Fernando Muñagorri came third in the third heat of the 100 metres sprint. The latter two, Labourdette and Muñagorri, took part in the 4 x 100 relay, the last in their series. This Dutch Olympics closes with a reference to J. Echevarri and Goicoechea, members of the field hockey team, which ranked seventh.
