GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

The estuaries. The northern mountain range of Bizkaia creates a series of short rivers that have given rise to beautiful estuaries, such as the Artibai in Ondarroa, the Lea in Lekeitio, the Mundaka in Gernika and the Butrón in Plentzia. Within this area there are other small estuaries or toy inlets, such as those of Ea, Laga and Arminza. The abrupt cut of this coastline takes us from the charm of Ondarroa and Lekeitio, to the whimsy of Laga and the full beauty of the estuary of Mundaka or Guernika. If we look out over the vast panorama from Anzoras point, we can make out the elongated island of Izaro beyond the mouth. Bermeo, Mundaca, Sukarrieta, the island of Txatxarramendi, the smaller island of Santiandere and the greens, blues and ochres towards Busturia, Forua, Murueta and Gernika. As we travel along the estuary from Gernika to Bermeo, we will see Ajanguiz, perched on the hillside, Gauteguiz de Arteaga, Cortezubi, Kanala and the pointed mountains of San Miguel de Ereño and San Pedro de Atxarre. Bermeo presents us with its marine resilience, its incomparable people, like all these towns of brave seafarers. We leave the area of this estuary and we are already in Matxitxako and then in San Pelayo de Bakio. Another stretch of coastline of rare beauty with the rock of Aketxe and Gaztelugatxe, the beach of Bakio, and then, along the steep coast, the cove of Armintza. It is necessary to go inland to reach Gorlitz and Plentzia, crossing Cape Villano. With the view of this placid estuary of Gaminitz, we end the region of the estuaries.
