GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

Region of Saint-Jean-de-Luz or Nivelle. This is the basin of the river Nivelle, which the locals call Urdazuria, Ugarana and even by other names. Its headwaters are located in the Navarrese part of Zugarramurdi and Urdax. The Alkurrunz, Artxuri and Otsondo mountains provide the first flows to the Urdazuri, which will later be officially called Nivelle. This basin has a tributary that flows through the caves of Zugarramurdi and comes out of its mysterious den, full of enchantments and suggestions. The villages of Ainhoa, Sara, Senpere, Ascain and San Juan de Luz belong to this small region. Via Behobia or Endaya, we pass through San Juan de Luz - Donibane Loitzun - where the golden beach awaits us, its maze of streets, its Basque-style houses that look across the estuary to those of Ciburu. Continuing up the basin, we reach Azkain. To the right of the pelota court, the house of the pelota player Otharre s us the plaque of Pierre Loti reminding us that he wrote "Ramuntcho" there. Another one s Otharre, with his big beret. From Azkain we head towards Sara. Meadows and more meadows. Farmhouses like pigeons perched on emeralds. The road gets steeper and we enter Sara. We are already in the square. Its beautiful church, a classic church with galleries, like those of Donibane Loitzun, Askain, Senpere, etc. On the outside, it has an air of brotherhood with that of Sumbilla. The single-walled gable, with its gracefully undulating crest, the red half-timbered houses, the display of flowers, are like a hallmark of this friendly region. But the carefully nailed tonneau-shaped slabs that enclose the estates are the antithesis of the flowery, feminine French-influenced enclosures.
