GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

The Ega region. The hydrographic that collects the river Ega comes, the most important part, from a series of valleys hanging from Urbasa, Enzia, Iturrieta, the mountains of Vitoria, Izkiz and Lokiz. The Ega itself originates in the land of Alava. One of its branches originates in the Cantabria mountain range, near Lagrán. It flows through Bajauri and Obecuri (Treviño), Bernedo and Angostina (A). It enters Navarre through the northern foothills of Cantabria-Codés and continues its course as far as Santa Cruz de Campezo (A). At this point it joins the other branch of the Ega from Roitegui, Musitu, Cicujano, Leorza, Maestu and Antoñana. From the Azazeta mountains it has received the Berrón, through Corres and Bujanda to the river Izkiz, and at Antoñana to the Sabando. The Ega, definitively formed, before entering Navarre, receives the Biarra, which collects the waters of the Arana valley. This area of valleys to the north and east - Arraya, Arana, Lana, Berrueza, Amescoas, Allin, Abárzuza, etc. - is complemented by another wide, more open region, whose limits could be marked with an arc, from Armañanzas and Torres, to Allo, Dicastillo and Oteiza. Almost in the centre of the two areas is Estella, the undisputed capital of the Ega region. Production is varied. Wood, livestock, cereals and various agricultural products in the north. Wine, oil, selected vegetables, fruit and cereals in the south. In Estella today, the monumental and historical combine with the modern and progressive. The proximity of Urbasa gives it an immense natural summer park. The southern part, also nearby, offers an extensive horizon to the warm lands of the riverside.
