GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

Uhaitzandi or Zuberoa region. The Adur, in ultrapuertos, plays the same collector role as the Ebro in Rioja and Navarre. The waters of Zuberoa, Lower Navarre and part of Laburdi flow into it. The Zuberoa region is formed by the river Uhaitiandi or Saisón. With the exception of the small area of Barkoxe and Eskiula, on the Béarn side of the Vert, the whole of Zuberoa is included in this geographical basin. Its headwaters are formed by the upper Zuberoa or Basaburia, which is a fork formed by the valleys of Santa Engracia and Larrau. This geographical headwaters is supported by the Navarrese valleys of Salazar and Erronkari (Ronkal), with the Ori, Otsogorrigañe, Belai, Kartxila, Lakura, Larregorri, Zanpori, Larra and Suskuze massifs. Once the Uhaitzandi is formed in Lik, it collects all the waters from both sides, from its hidden valleys, as far as Mauleón, the capital of Zuberoa. It continues along the Petarre, through more open land, to the Gabe and the Adur. Travelling through Zuberoa is a delight for the senses. Forests, purplish or grey rocks that emerge from the luxuriant greenery, lively streams, majestic Uhaitzandi, villages nestled among orchards and hedgerows dotted with long-haired sheep. Houses with grey, pointed roofs, with four wide slopes. The gorges of Kakueta, Holzarte, Olhadibia, Ibyharka and Uhadjarre are natural wonders unequalled, at least in Europe.
