GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

Garazi or Nive region. The Nive or Errobia basin must be divided in two. The Navarrese part as far as the forges leading to Itxasou, in Laburdi, and from here to Cambo, Ustaritz and Bayona. Its headwaters are mainly in the cirque of mountains surrounding Donibane Garazi (San Juan Pie de Puerto), from the Ahuzki area to Esterenzubi and Ibañeta. This natural area also includes the valleys of Baigorri and Ortzaite, the former bordering Alta Navarra. The largest basin is that of Donibane Garazi with the villages of Arnegui, Lasa, Behorlegui, Lakarra, Monguelos, Bustintza, Ispuru, Uharte, Mendibe, Esterenzubi, Zaro, Busunaritz, etc. An agricultural, livestock and forestry region, of the Cantabrian-Pyrenean type, with beautiful villages and scattered farmhouses. From the attractive Itxasou, where the Nive crosses the beautiful Roldán pass, this beautiful river continues its course through the hilly area of Cambo and Ustaritz. As in the previous area, the meadows, the wooded hillsides, of lower altitude, and the clean villages, climbing the slopes or spread out in the wide meadows, continue. Cambo, from its plateau, contemplates the passing of the river at its feet, through grids of green corn, fodder and vegetables. In Ustaritz, with less of a gradient, you can also see the wide, clean river flowing by. Its course to Bayonne runs smoothly, through Herauritz and Arrunza, well-kept flat lands. The low basins of the Nivelle (in Saint-Jean-de-Luz), the Nive and the Adour (in Bayonne), form a coastal region without orographic difficulties, where the industry of the Basque Country of ultra-Brabidasoa is concentrated. From Bayonne, it is easy to reach the region of Azparren, which can be considered parallel to that of Cambo-Ustaritz.
