GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

Bayas region. This region is located the Gorbea mountain range to the north, the Arrato and Badaya mountain ranges to the east, and the Altube, Guibijo and Arcamo mountains to the west. Its headland, with Murguia as its capital, is the Zuya valley, a land of maize, fodder and livestock. As local expansion, in addition to the immensity of Gorbea, it has the beautiful road that climbs up to the sanctuary of the Virgen de Oro, on a spur of Arrato. The course of the Bayas runs through Urcabustaiz and enters Cuartango, which is the central part of this region. Cuartango, with Zuazo as its capital, is an area of wheat dominated by the Badaya and Arcamo mountain ranges and the pyramid of Mount Marinda. To the west, it stretches to the Luna-Arriano-Archua-Guillarte corner and other humble villages that live off agriculture and livestock, enclosed by the Bayerro mountains. Then the valley that marks the course of the Bayas narrows until it reaches the Techa gorge that ends in Subijana. Here a beautiful old bridge links this area with the Lacozmonte corridor, with its string of villages: Morillas, Ormijana, Escota, Artaza, Barrón, Guinea and Cárcamo. To enter Ribera Alta, with Pobes as its capital, the Bayas passes the mountains of Tuyo and the Lacozmonte chain. Through Hereña onwards, in an idyllic walk, it goes through Ribera Baja to Rivabellosa, and flows into the Ebro near Miranda.
