GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

The Deba region. The headwaters of this region are formed by the Arantzazu, Zaraya and Elguea mountain ranges, the Léniz and Aramaio valleys (A). In San Prudencio, below Mondragón, the Deva receives the waters of the Oñate basin collected by the River Aránzazu. The River Deva passes through Vergara and Placencia, making its way through steep mountains. At Málzaga it is joined by the Ego from Eibar. The steep gorge continues to Elgóibar, Alzola, Mendaro and Deva. As we can see as we travel through it, this region is more enclosed than that of the Oria, which is more mountainous. The widest areas are those of Oñati, Bergara and the Leintz Valley. The narrowest is Soraluze. The importance of this region lies in its great industry. The metal branch, from the blast furnaces to the various manufactures, fabrics, etc. The Léniz valley, with Eskoriatza, Arechavaleta and Mondragón, has an industrial importance almost comparable to that of Soraluzea, Eibar and Elgoibar, with Eibar being the most industrial town in Gipuzkoa. Oñati and Bergara present a more balanced variety, with more agricultural complements. Deba is the beach of the area, the expansive outlet to the sea. The rural area surrounding Arechavaleta and the poetic valley of Aramayona (A) are a respite for this manufacturing area of the Leintz valley. This enormous human concentration of the Escoriatza- Aretxabaleta-Arrasate-Bergara stretch has an escape at its disposal: just a few minutes away, the open spaces of Alava. Oñati has, like an immense park, the beauties of Araoz, Aránzazu and Aitzgorri. Arrasate is close to the Udala and the entrance to Bizkaia through Elorrio. Eibar and Soraluze can cross Areitio through Ermua, which is part of this area of Deba, and enjoy the beauty of the Duranguesado. From Eibar and Elgóibar they can easily enter the high area near Markina, in Bizkaia.
