GEOGRAPHY (NATURAL REGIONS)

Urola region. The Urola region is formed in the Aitzgorri massif and the Legazpia-Villarreal-Zumárraga industrial area. It lies the basins of the Deva and the Oria. Therefore, this region is, geographically speaking, the most central region of Guipúzcoa. The River Urola is the river of Azcoitia and Azpeitia. This river flows through rugged stretches until it reaches Azcoitia. From here it runs towards Azpeitia, along the slopes of Izarraitz, lapping the sanctuary of Loyola, down the valley to Azpeitia. From these two industrious towns it continues to Cestona and the fertile plains of Iraeta, Arrona, Aizarnazabal, Oikina and Bedua. It then flows into the sea at Zumaya, its natural beach. The factory towns at its headwaters have the Aitzgorri-Oñate-Aránzazu area for their expansion. Through Zumárraga they can reach Etxegárate and the exit to the wide horizons of Navarre and Alava. Those on the Azcoitia, Azpeitia and Cestona side have the beach of Zumaya, the pleasant area of Régil and the giants Izarraitz and Ernio nearby. On the Elgóibar side they can quickly reach the Marquina route and its high mountains.
