FRANCISCANS

San Sebastian. It was founded with Royal license in the house called Chartiko with its belongings, by virtue of a deed granted on May 6, 1606 the city and the representative of the Order. This convent was suppressed in 1836 by order of the Government, and the Mercy was later installed in said building and then an Engineers barracks. In his memory, the Municipal Corporation agreed on July 23, 1895 to give the name of San Francisco to a street in the city. The Convent of San Francisco de San Sebasti n is very modern as it was founded by agreement of the Definitive Board of October 19, 1922 prior to various ecclesiastical licenses. It was built in the Eguía neighborhood at the southern end of Paseo de Atocha or Paseo del Duque de Mandas, which was formerly called Campo de San Francisco because there was a Franciscan convent dedicated to Jesus there. On June 3, 1923, a provisional chapel was established with two parents and a professed layman and a donate in a nearby chalet ceded for this purpose by Mr. Cortajarena, owner of the Tairones farm. The Gothic church with three naves and the convent with capacity for 24 religious were built. The inauguration took place on May 12, 1926. The golden altars are the work of the Rom n Goicoechea workshops, in Vitoria, and the organ, from Casa Amezua, in San Sebasti n. In the 1928 capitular of the province, his rank was raised. The residence of the provincial minister was transferred to this convent. In 1933 it had 9 fathers, 3 professed laymen and 1 donated.
