FRANCISCANS

Tudela. According to tradition, the primitive Franciscan convent was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi during his visit 1213 and 1215. It was installed on the site currently occupied by the Hospital de Nuestra Señora de Gracia. Pope Gregory VII authorised them to establish themselves elsewhere. It is said that Queen Juana authorised the Franciscans to bury seculars in her church in 1275. It is known that the new convent already existed in 1369 when the abbess of the Convent of Santa Clara exchanged two vineyards in the district of Mosquera for some houses and a hospital that the brotherhoods of Santiago and San Vicente had in the district of San Julián so that the Franciscans could build a church and monastery. It is also known that in 1372 the new convent was already built.
