An area of obligatory passage from the plains of Alava to the coast, it also appears, from archaeological discoveries, to have been populated in prehistoric times. The Lezetxiki cave in the Garagarza district of Arrasate, the Aitzorrotz site in the Zaraia massif (access from Eskoriatza) and the Axtroki treasure consisting of two Celtic gold bowls in the Bolibar-Ugazua district of Eskoriatza can be mentioned in this respect.
