LEMONIZ NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

The Lemóniz reactors, like most of those existing in the United States, are pressurized light water (PWR). That is, they use running water to moderate the high-speed neutrons released by fission reactions, which take place in the core of the reactor. The commercialization of this type of plant is in the hands of the Babcock & Wilcox Company, Combustion Engineering Inc., Westinghouse Electric Corporation and General Electric Company, some ten miles from the center of Bilbao and located on the coast. The general settlement of the power station was achieved by means of a breakwater dike that gained ground from the sea to close the Basordas cove, Arminza and Bakio. This and the initial irregularities of Iberduero provoked the opposition to the construction of this plant by organizations created in this regard and by political parties.
