La Real Compañía Guipuzcoana de Caracas (1995 version)

Granting of a monopoly (1742) and Caracas rebellion (1749). In response to the Guipuzcoana Company's merits during the war period, the Monarch granted it exclusive trade with the Province of Caracas in 1742. The monopolistic situation under which the Company operated caused great unrest among the inhabitants of Caracas. The prices at which it purchased from the colonials provoked unrest among the harvesters, who demanded higher prices for their products. Whether due to these circumstances or because the English could no longer trade with Caracas with impunity, the truth is that in 1749 a rebellion broke out against the Company's operations in Venezuela. Its promoters, among whom Francisco de León stood out, stated that the rebellion was not against the Monarch, but against the Guipuzcoana Company.
