Main mountain ranges. If we examine the map of the Basque Country carefully, we will soon see that the geography of Alava is an astonishing continuation of that of Navarre. The three main mountain ranges that cross Alava from east to west come from Navarre. 1) The extension of the Pyrenean chain - Sierra de Aralar - reaches the borders of Alava and Guipúzcoa. Here, with the mountains of Alzania and Aratz (1,460 m.), Urkilla, Aránzazu, Elguea (1,186 m.), Arlabán, peñas de Anboto (V) (1,360 m.) and Gorbea (1,537 m.) the highest point in Alava. 2) The central Alava mountain range, which borders the Alava plain to the south, is an extension of the Navarre mountain range of Urbasa. These elevations continue through the heights of Enzia (1,175 m. in Abitigarraga), the mountains of Iturrieta, the Azázeta pass, and the mountains of Vitoria (Palogán 910 m.). The Zadorra river crosses the mountain range in the Tuyo mountains (Conchas de Arganzón). Further west - in Subijana - the river Bayas separates the converging mountain ranges of Badaya and Arkamo. The latter joins the Guibijo range in the confines of Burgos. 3) The third mountain range is an extension of the Codés mountain range (N.). It begins in the valley of the Ega -peña de Yoar, 1,421 m. -. But this part of the mountain range Yoar and the village of Bernedo in Alava falls within Navarre. At this point it takes the name of Sierra de Cantabria (Husos de Laguardia, 1,300 m.) and serves as the northern limit of the Rioja Alavesa. At Samaniego it is called the Sierra de Toloño and ends at the Buradón cliffs.
