Song of Ferdinand (1475)
More than two thousand Guipuzcoans served the Catholic Monarchs in the sieges of Toro, Zamora and Burgos, as well as in the military factions that occurred that year. One day, the king having gone hunting, and not returning soon, according to Isasti, or, as Garibay says, because he had secretly left for Valladolid, the Guipuzcoans became agitated, fearing some treason, and with great zeal for the service of their King, they began to ask about him, some shouting: "Daca King, Daca King," until they were calmed by persuading them that the King was alive and free; an episode that gave rise to the following song:
Our Green EarsBillatu degu basoan,Goizean eizera joana,Pozkida bete osoanI'm going to give you a chanceLet's go and see what we doPortuguese amilka igesi.
To our lord the KingWe found in the forest;Early in the morning he went hunting, completely joyful. For he himself would contemplate,Some dead and others aliveThe Portuguese escaping and falling.
