The historian and Basque-language poet Arnald de Oihenart was born in this village in 1592. In 1869, L. L. Bonaparte classified the commune as belonging to the Soulet Basque dialect and, within that, to the distinct sub-dialect and variety of Tardets. In 1968, the number of Basque speakers stood at 1,060, representing 15 per cent of the concentrated population and 90 per cent of the dispersed population (P. de Yrizar: ‘The dialects and varieties of the Basque language’, Sep. Bulletin of the Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country, 1973, pp. 54–55).
Herri honetan jaio zen 1592an Arnald de Oihenart euskal historialari eta olerkaria. L. L. Bonapartek, 1869an, komuna zubereran sailkatu zuen eta, horren barruan, berezko azpieuskalkian eta Atharratzeko barietatean. 1968an, 1.060 euskaldun zeuden, hau da, bere biztanleriaren % 15 eta barreiatuaren % 90 (P. de Yrizar: "Los dialectos y variedades de la lengua vasca", sep. Euskalerriaren Adiskideen Elkartearen Buletina, 1973, 54-55. or.).
