GUEVARA HOUSE

House splendor. XVII century: The Counts of O ate 5. and 8. . The high point, political and economic, of the House of Guevara is constituted by the years of the 5th and 8th Counts, both called Iigo V lez de Guevara and Tassis, for which some authors have confused them . It coincides with the progressive detachment of the Guevaras from their patrimonial lands due to their accumulation of Titles and Grandeurs, which make them settle in the Madrid Court, where they will build their famous palace on Calle Mayor which, demolished in 1912, still preserves. its baroque cover.

Catherine de Guevara . Fifth Countess of Oate, whose figure is totally eclipsed by that of her husband and uncle D. Iigo V lez de Guevara y Tassis, Mr. de Salinillas, known by the title of his wife, in whom "the glories of the House de Oate, numbed by the long retirement of their last two owners, returned to their just splendor and greatness" (Salazar y Castro). An illustrious politician of his time, he enjoyed, apart from the copious assets of the House of Guevara, numerous positions and perks; and so it was: Commander of Mirabel and the Bastimentos del Campo de Montiel (1610) and Paracuellos (1633) in the Order of Stgo. Ambassador in Savoy, Flanders, Germany and Rome (1625); of the Councils of State and War, President of the Council of Military Orders and Grandee of Spain (1640), even affirming that he "towards Emperors". He died on 10-31-1644. His wife had 10 children: Pedro V lez de Guevara , 6. Count of Oate, while his parents were alive. He died unmarried in 1615 from a fall from a horse; Juan V lez de Guevara , 7. C. de Oate, who also used the title while his parents were alive. He died without issue; Iigo V lez de Guevara y Tassis , which follows; Felipe Manuel (d. 1642), who married the 2nd Countess of Escalante D. Ana Catalina de Guevara, without succession; Beltrán , who married his niece, to follow; Mariana , married (1615) with Pedro Pimentel, 3rd M. de Viana. Widow, professors in Sta. Cruz de Valladolid; Maria , Angela and Catalina , who professed in the same monastery as Mariana; and Ana M. , wife of 8. M. de Aguilar, Bernardo de Silva and Manrique.

Iñigo Vélez de Guevara and Tassís , Eighth Count of Oate. He inherited from his uncle D. Juan de Tassis the county of Villamediana and the position of Correo Mayor de Espa a. Following in his father's footsteps, he was Commander of Avanilla, of the Order of Calatrava; of the Councils of War and State, Extraordinary Ambassador to Great Britain and Rome, Governor of Milan and Vicar General of Italy and Viceroy of Naples (1648), charges in which he demonstrated great political stature. Political enemy of the Count-Duke, against whom he conspired (1644), Splenger considers him one of the most powerful personalities of his time. In 1651 Felipe IV granted him the Marquisate of Campo Real for the heirs of the House of Guevara (its name was changed to that of Marquis de Guevara in 1653). The beginning of the construction of the Palace of the Counts of Oate in Madrid, around 1655, is due to him. He died in Madrid on 2-22-1658. He had married in 1621 D. Antonia Manrique de la Cerda (daughter of the 5th Marqués de Aguilar, D. Bernardo). They had two daughters: Catalina , who follows; and D. Mariana , married in 1650 to Juan Domingo Ramez de Arellano, 9. Count of Aguilar.

Catalina Vélez de Guevara . Ninth Countess of Oate, 3. C. of Villamediana and 1. M. of Campo Real (or Guevara), together with her husband; Mrs. de Guevara and other patrimonial assets of the House. Married his uncle D. Beltrán V lez de Guevara (son of the 5th count), Knight of Alcántara (1619), Commander of Paracuellos and the Bastimentos del Campo de Montiel in the order of Santiago (1642). Viceroy of Sardinia, where he died on 2-21-1652. Upon her death, D. Catalina married the widowed son-in-law of the Count-Duke of Olivares, D. Ramiro N ez Felipez de Guzm n, 2nd. Duke of Sanlcar la Mayor and Medina de las Torres. He finished the construction of the palace started by his father. D. Catalina had five children from the first marriage and one from the second. They were these: I igo , which follows; Beltrán de Guevara , who married in 1687 the 12th Duchess of Néjera D. Nicolasa Manrique de Mendoza; Anthony , m. bachelor in 1688; Antonia , wife of Fco. Casimiro Pimentel, 12. C. de Benavente; D. Josefa M. de Guevara , married twice: to Carlos Teodoro Trivulcio, Prince of Musaco; and widow, with Juan Clar s de Guzm n, M. de Fuentes; and D. Mariana N ez de Guzm n , 4. D. of Medina de las Torres, married to the 10. Duke of Medina Sidonia.

Iñigo Vélez de Guevara . Tenth Count of Oate, 4. of Villamediana, 2. M. of Campo Real, Grandee of Spain; Knight of the Tois n. He died in 1699. He had married D. Luisa Clara de Ligny y de Nassau (daughter of Claudio Lamoral, Prince of Ligny) in 1666. They had three children: Diego Gaspar de Guevara, II. C. de O ate, etc. Married on 8-4-1694 to M. Nicolasa de la Cerda y Aragón (h. of 7. D. de Medinaceli), having no succession, for which reason his sister Melchora came to inherit his estates; D. Melchora, who follows; and Maria , dead young and single.
