Monarchy and Nobility

Charles II of Navarre the Bad

The Treaty of Vernon, 25 March 1371. Charles II resigned himself to losing Mantes and Meulan, as well as Longueville, by ratifying in the interview of Vernon (Delachenal: Histoire..., t. III, p. 491) the agreement of 1365 and by swearing "faith, loyalty and obedience" to the King of France for his French possessions. Entertained in Paris, peace seemed sealed for good. In November 1371, one of his representatives, Ligier d'Orgessin, received Montpellier as a Navarrese possession. Charles visited his new domain in March of the following year.
