Painters

Real, Rafael del

Painter. Although born in the village of Gallur, Zaragoza, in 1932, he moved to Tudela less than a year later, where he lived until 1954. He currently lives and works in Madrid.

He studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and furthered his training in various countries, including Japan - whose culture would significantly influence his painting - thanks to the scholarships he received. These include the Fine Arts scholarship from the Provincial Council of Navarre in 1954, the Rodríguez Acosta Foundation scholarship in 1958, the University of Perugia scholarship in 1960, and the Extraordinary Scholarship from the Provincial Council of Navarre in 1964. He has participated in over a hundred solo and group exhibitions, and his work is part of collections held by institutions such as the Museum of Navarre, the Autonomous University of Madrid, and the city councils of Tudela and Pamplona, among others.

As Salvador Martín Cruz says when talking about his work in the book Pintores Navarros, his work is:

"a painting that offers the difficult virtue of being coherent with vital evolution, which started from expressionism, passed through abstraction, discovered impressionism and, driven by the Zen experience, ended in perfectionist realism."

A quote that ultimately demonstrates that Del Real has cultivated very different styles throughout his career, always influenced by his surroundings and prevailing pictorial currents. Landscape, still life, and portraiture are the main themes of his painting, in which he seeks the simplicity of everyday life to create his visual compositions. He masters drawing and enjoys a free use of color, which means that his work combines completely abstract paintings in which color and form prevail over any argument, with almost costumbrist scenes.
