Mugica Arrue, Martin de

Governor of Chile in 1646. He was a native of Ordizia (Gipuzkoa). He reestablished discipline in the army and fought administrative corruption. He favoured the lower classes by abolishing some taxes and protecting horse breeding. He planned the founding of towns in Itata, Maule and Colchagua. He rebuilt Santiago de Chile, which had been destroyed by the earthquake of 13 May 1647. He died in Santiago in April 1649. Knight of Santiago (1646).
