GROS, Tomas

A neighbour of Donostia-San Sebastián who gave his name to one of the most popular neighbourhoods of modern Donostia. When the City Council decided in 1891 and 1892, at the proposal of Tomás Gros, to develop the areas of land located on the right bank of the river Urumea, facing the sea, it had to reach an agreement with the owners of almost all the land to be developed, Mr. Tomás Gros and Mr. Juan Iribas. The agreement put the municipality in a very advantageous position to be able to carry out the plan. Messrs. Gros and Iribas would pay for the construction of the wall to support the coast (the old wall that was located where the Paseo de Colón is now) and would cede the land for roads and public buildings at two pesetas per metre and the sand or earth for filling in the streets free of charge. By agreement of the Town Council on 30th January 1920, the new street starting at Miracruz and ending at Iztueta was given the name of Tomás Gros.
