GEOGRAPHY (ÁLAVA-ARABA: HYDROGRAPHY)

River Ega. The upper basin of the Ega is in Alava. It is formed by two fluvial branches that bear the same name and meet at Santa Cruz de Campezo. The southern branch starts in Lagrán, in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria. It runs parallel to the aforementioned mountain range, from west to east. It passes through Villaverde, Bernedo (municipal district) and Angostina. It enters Navarre via Marañón and continues through the municipalities of Cabredo and Genevilla. It enters Alava again at Santa Cruz de Campezo. The northern branch of the Ega comes from the mountains of Iturrieta (continuation of Enzia), from the area the villages of Iturrieta, Onraita and Azcárate. It passes through the villages of Azqueta, Virgala Mayor and Menor, Maestu, Atauri and Antoñana. Coming from the Izkiz mountains, it receives the Agua Mayor. The two Ega, North and South, meet at Santa Cruz de Campezo, forming the Ega itself. Before entering Navarre, to the south of Zúñiga, it receives the waters of the valley of San Vicente de Arana. Once in Navarre, it becomes a very important river, the River Estella, which after a long course flows into the Ebro.
