Religious Orders

FRANCISCANS

Vitoria. The Convent of San Francisco de Vitoria is supposed to have been founded by the saint when he passed through the city in 1214, according to the historian Landazuri. At least it is mentioned in a document from 1248 and in another from 1275, the latter stating that it was a house of minor religious. The benefactor of this convent was Berenguela López, niece of the Lord of Vizcaya. She made a precious donation of jewellery in a will granted in 1296. In the 1480s, the Town Council met in the chapel of La Magdalena in the convent church. The provincial chapters were held there, comprising the nations of Alava, Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa and the Mountains. In 1690, the general chapter of the whole order was held. Among his religious there were three in charge of reading Sumulas, Logic and Philosophy and another three for the teaching and lesson of Philosophy. It is worth mentioning the remarkable college in which the young religious studied. The subsequent history of the convent follows the political vicissitudes of exclaustration and dispossession. The convent was demolished in 1930.
