Agirre Azurza, Jose Alberto

Composer, organist and conductor. He was born in Errezil on 7 August 1886 and died in Andoain on 23 November 1973.

He began his musical training with Juan María Alústiza and Faustino Sarasola, continuing his studies with Santiago Azurza, and later with Beltrán Pagola, Germán Cendoya and Eduardo Mocoroa. In 1914, he took over the direction of the Andoain Municipal Band, as well as the position of organist at the parish church of San Martín and the direction of the parish choir, also known as the Andoaindarra Choir. He was also a private teacher and taught at the minor seminary in Andoain. He received various tributes in recognition of his work (1949, 1964) and in 1982 the parish choir adopted his name, becoming the Alberto Aguirre Choir.

He composed mainly religious music and, according to José Luis Ansorena, it s the influence of the reform of religious music in Spain. We can mention the four masses and the requiem, the zarzuela Lili and songs in Basque such as Euskeldun zintzo for four voices and organ, or Nere kuttun polita for soloist and four voices.
