Public Limited Company. Navarre company set up in March 1970 by absorption by Papelera de Leiza, S. A. of the companies Sarrió, Compañía Anónima de Papeles, S. A. and Eurokote, S. A. A., of the companies Sarrió, Compañía Anónima de Papeles, S. A. and Eurokote, S. A. Its registered office, like those of the previous companies, is in Leitza. It is the head of a group of companies that covers the whole process of obtaining raw materials, manufacturing paper and its distribution. The Sarrió Group began in 1948 as a family business dedicated to the marketing of paper. In 1959 it started up a coated paper mill in Leitza, which has been the centre of the complex ever since. At the end of 1964, it started production in Leitza of ‘Eurokote’ high-gloss coated paper and cardboard, which has achieved a strong development working with its own brand and patents. Eurokote' is manufactured in France, Italy, Chile and Mexico under licence from the Leitza company, which exports 35 % of its production. In 1968 the companies Papelera Uranga, S.A., which had been operating in Berrobi (Gipuzkoa) since 1868, and Ruiz de Arcaute y Cía, S.A., of Tolosa, were taken over by the group (see LA ESPERANZA). The facilities of both companies were set up in Berrobi. At the beginning of 1970 the following companies formed part of the Sarrió group: Sarrió, C. A. P.; Papelera de Leiza, S. A.; Eurokote, S. A.; Coloplás, S. A.; Comercial de Papeles Heliográficos y Especiales de Leiza, S. A.; Disma Sarrió, S. A.; Euromac, Corp. Pap., S. A. (Mexico); Eurowall, S. A.; Exclusivas y Pav., S. A.; Inmobiliaria Samar, S. A.; La Montañanesa, S. A.; Muroplás, S. A.; Papelera Arrosi, S. A.; Plastimur, S. A.; Productora Nacional del Cartón, S. A. (Venezuela); Productos Metalizados, S. A. (Colombia); Sarrió-Renor, Ltda. The Leitza mills produce classic and special coated papers, ‘Eurokote’ high gloss coated papers and boards, ‘Colowall’, ‘Lancal’, ‘Eurocalco’, ‘Metalvac’ decorative wallpapers, heliographic papers, high vacuum metallised papers, plasticised papers and other types of special papers. The companies tend to be self-suppliers of base paper at their mills in Berrobi and elsewhere. It is also involved in reforestation, having started, for example, eucalyptus plantations in the province of Badajoz. In the field of marketing, it has also developed subsidiary companies, which go as far as direct sales to private consumers. It has exported to 43 countries in Europe, Asia Minor, Africa and America. It receives royalties from manufacturing licences granted to foreign companies. In 1989 it merged with the Italian company ‘Cartiere Saffa’. The new Sarrió, S.A., results in a Spanish shareholding of 65 %, with the Italian company holding 35 %. In 1990 Cartiere Saffa held 49 % of the capital and, following the purchase of 4,9 % of the German company Feldmühle, took control of the company. In 1991 the company was bought by the Torraspapel group and renamed Sarrió, Papel y Celulosa.
