Portuondo Espinosa, Juan Antonio

Psychiatrist and psychologist. Born on January 21, 1927, in Havana, Cuba, he was of Basque origin (not Biscayan). Died on August 17, 2005, in Barcelona, Spain.

He dedicated his life to the study and research of psychology, psychotherapy, psychopathology, psychodiagnosis, and psychoanalysis, contributing important ideas. He was the creator of the Psychoanalytic Rorchach Technique and the Countertransference Group Psychotherapy Technique.

Doctor of Medicine from the University of Havana, specializing in Psychiatry at the Calixto García Hospital in Havana; Doctor of Philosophy and Letters from the University of Havana and Doctor of Psychology from the José Martí International University in Havana (He studied Psychology at the University of Santo Tomas de Villanueva in Havana, the National University of José Martí in Havana, and the Masonic University of Havana).

Industrial Psychologist and Publicist on Cuban Radio Television CMQ y C a. Bacard, in Puerto Rico.

Self-Defense and Judo Professor (third DAN black belt in 1957).

He worked with Dr. Frisso Potts in Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama at the Mental Hygiene and Neuropsychiatry Dispensary in Havana.

In 1960 he became director of the Psychology Department at the National Psychiatric Hospital of Havana (Mazorra). He was also the founder and director of the former International Center for Psychodiagnosis and Psychotherapy (1968-1982, Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia), and the later, still-existing International Center for Psychology (1983, Barcelona), which he directed until his death on August 17, 2005.

Direct Psychoanalyst from the Institute of Direct Psychoanalysis, directed by Dr. John Nathaniel Rosen, in Doylestown, PA (USA), diploma awarded by Dr. Rosen himself, naming him representative and trainer for the teaching and psychotherapeutic treatment of Direct Psychoanalysis throughout Europe and Latin America.
