ECHEVARRIA MUGARZA, Eleuterio

Biographical profile

Son of Juan Francisco, a farmer, and María José, he was born in the Anteiglesia of Bedia (Bizkaia) on February 20, 1892, a town where his ancestors were also from [1] .

He died without abandoning his bachelorhood, in Bizkaia, on February 20, 1969.

Training

He entered the Veterinary School of Zaragoza on September 30, 1911, at the age of 19, after completing high school at the General and Technical Institute of Bilbao. He was a good student.

He was on the honor roll of Zootechnics and Sanitary Police. On June 5 and 7, 1915, he took the Revalidation exam, which he passed with a grade of notable [2] .

Professional activity

Errezil -formerly R gil- (Gipuzkoa). In the session held on February 10, 1916 by the City Council of the University of Errezil under the Presidency of its mayor D. Jos Domingo Ayerza y Cincunegui, while reporting the resignation of the veterinarian Arregui Egua, it was agreed to appoint D. Eleuterio Echeverr a Mugarza temporarily and to call for the position again with the same conditions [3] :

At the municipal session of the Errezil City Council on March 19, 1916, under the presidency of Mayor D. Jos Domingo Ayerza y Cincunegui, he was named owner of the square [4] .

Two years later, on August 18, 1918, the mayor of Errezil, Ayerza and Cincunegui reported that our protagonist was resigning from his position, due to his transfer to Sopuerta (Bizkaia) and they agreed to announce the vacancy again [5] .

Sopuerta (Bizkaia). On 1 September 1918 he took up the position of Meat Inspector in Sopuerta (Bizkaia) where he remained until June 1921.

O ati (Gipuzkoa). He returned to Gipuzkoa, taking up the first position of Meat Inspector in O ati (Gipuzkoa) on 20 June 1921. The second position was occupied by Serapio Medrano Arbizu.

He remained in Oatí until his retirement on February 20, 1962, to return to his native Bizkaia.

Legazpi and Zumarraga (Gipuzkoa). In February 1939, due to circumstances arising from the war, the town of Legazpi and Zumarraga were occupied for several weeks.

Echeverría, a Carlist ideologist, was considered a fundamentalist and was a firm admirer of the 1936 coup plotters.

An anecdote about its end.

It is said that, seeing his end approaching, being a Catholic, he ed the presence of a priest to confess his terrible behavior towards his companion Serapio Medrano Arbizu, whom he persecuted, slandered, humiliated and morally ruined, asking him to act as an intermediary to his forgiveness. Once this was obtained, from a tired, physically and psychologically weak Medrano, he was able to rest in peace.
