COUNCIL OF MAÇON

In the French city of Maçon, in order to proceed against the bishops who had supported Gondovald, King Gontran convened this Council, which met on 23 October 585 under the presidency of Priscus, Bishop of Lyon. Forty-six bishops attended and twenty sent representatives. From the ecclesiastical province of Elusa (Eauze) Faustus of Auch, Orestes of Bazas, Rusticus of Aire, Savin of Bearn, Rufin of Comminges, Lucerius of Oloron, and Amelius of Bigorre attended. Faustianus of Dax, accused of supporting the rebellion, was deposed. The following were sentenced to specified penalties: Berthramn, of Bordeaux; Orestes, of Bazas, and Palladius, of Saintes. In the place of Faustianus they elected as bishop of Dax Nicetius, count of Dax, brother of Rusticus, bishop of Aire. It is not known what position the bishops Faustus of Auch, Savinus of Bearne, Lucerius of Oloron, Amelius of Bigorre, and Quintianus of Conserans took with regard to Gondovald and his revolt. It had a profound effect on the ecclesiastical history of early medieval Vasconia.
