Baztandarren Biltzarra

This is the name given to the most representative festival in the Baztan valley. It has been held on the Sunday after or before the festival of Santiago de Elizondo (25 July) since 1964, when it was inaugurated on the initiative of councillor Ana María Marín. It is in Elizondo, the capital of the valley and municipality, where the representatives of the towns and villages meet to preside over the events. At half past nine in the morning, all the representatives gather with their floats; 2. At half past nine, "Herri Meza" concelebrated by the parish priests of the 15 villages in Basque, accompanied by bertsolaris, txistularis, txalaparta, song groups and dantzaris; 3. Parade of floats and folklore groups through the streets of Elizondo.

These floats represent scenes from everyday life in the valley: Aizkolari, Artzaya, La Cocina Vasca, La Boda a la antigua usanza, etc. Each village presents a float followed by young people dressed in traditional costume, txistularis, accordion players, albokaris and the "Zampanzar" from Ituren; 4th Great "mutildantza" in the main square with the participation of both young people and veteran dantzaris baztandarras; 5th At 2 p.m., a popular banquet with more than a thousand diners. The menu is typical of the valley: Lecároz omelette, piperrada, chicken, Basque cake, wine, coffee and liqueurs; 6th After lunch, various performances on the stage and in the surrounding area.
