Licenciado en Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales por la Universidad de Deusto, amplió estudios en Bélgica y Holanda. Secretario del Sindicato empresarial alavés (SEA) desde 1996 hasta febrero de 2001, en que pasa a la sede bilbaína de la consultora "KPMG Peat Marwick".
