Perteneció al reino de Navarra. Fue aldea de Laguardia hasta 1669 (el documento está fechado en Madrid el 18 de marzo de 1669), año en el que el rey Carlos II le concedió el título de villa. (Ref. "G. G. P. V. N.", t. Alava, p. 667).
