Adscrito a la cátedra de Derecho Civil de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Zaragoza, fue instituido en diciembre de 1953 bajo patrocinio de la Diputación Foral de Navarra. Fue su primer director el profesor Orlandiz.
