Título nobiliario concedido el 8 de junio de 1566 a don Gonzalo Mesía y Carrillo, señor de La Guardia. Es honrado con la dignidad de Grandeza de España el 16 de junio de 1903. En 1952 pasa a ostentarlo don Jaime Mariátegui y Arteaga.
