Public Limited Company. In 1949, Ángel Iglesias, the current president of IKUSI and its alma mater, founded a small electrical material and repair workshop in an attic on the Boulevard in San Sebastian. The company grew throughout the 1950s, specialising in electrical installations, including the new fluorescent lights, and the sale and repair of radios. In the 1960s, the company took advantage of the business opportunities opened up by the introduction of television in Spain to enter the antenna and er installation sector. Ángel Iglesias had made contact in Germany with several TV antenna manufacturers and had reached commercial agreements. This led to IKUSI becoming the main Spanish customer for antenna installation materials from 1960 to 1965. The scale of the business led to the transformation of the company into a manufacturer of the products and the birth of the IKUSI brand as a commercial reference. During this period, the company was organised as a legal entity and a rapid growth process began. It was clear that by then it was the work related to communication technologies that was going to determine the future of the company. In order to be able to respond to the continuous technological change, the R&D Department was set up in 1964. This commitment to technological renewal would also mark the spirit of the company up to the present day. In the second half of the 1960s, Ángel Iglesias laid the foundations of his industrial activity, which from that time until the present day has been based on the integration of s and the manufacture of electronic products of high technological value.
In the following years, and until the end of the 80s, IKUSI would vary its activity to include security technologies, public information s, remote control equipment for cranes and remote measurement s for domestic energy consumption and other services; emerging technologies would be integrated and the diversification of products and services would intensify, a way of acting that has accompanied the company up to the present day. This period also saw the full consolidation of the R&D Department, making the leap into electronics, and the internationalisation of the company, which became a group with subsidiaries in Portugal, France, Australia, Chile, Mexico, Russia and the U.A.E. (Dubai).
At present, Ikusi has a distribution network that responds to the demand of customers in more than 80 countries, including firms such as CAF, Bombardier, AENA, ADTranz, MTR Corporation, NI Railways, METRO, Larnród Eiréean, Hong-Kong Airport Express, GAP, STC Metro and Alstom, among others. IKUSI's efforts in research and innovation have recently been recognised with the Prince Felipe Award for Business Excellence in Technological Innovation in 2005 and the incorporation of the company the following year in the Leading Brands of Spain Forum, which is a notable affirmation of IKUSI's leadership as an identifying brand of Spanish origin with a wide international presence. Research and internationalisation have become the company's objectives in recent years. 2006 was a year of great efforts to achieve participation in some international R&D projects such as CENIT (IKUSI participates together with Teltronic, Indra, AT4wirless, Acorde, Scati, Labs and Satec in the project called ‘Broadband Professional Mobile Communications ’). This trend has been ed under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme. The companies that make up the group today are: IKUSI electrónica LDA (Portugal), IKUSI France SARL (France), IKUSI Anz PTY LTD (Australia-New Zealand), IKUSI GmbH (Germany), LLC IKUSI (Russia), Ingeniería IKUSI Chile, LTDA (Chile), IKUSI México, S.A. de C.V. (Mexico), IKUSI Middle East FZE (Dubai) and IKUSI Colombia S.A. (Colombia). In addition to these, IKUSI's headquarters moved to the San Sebastian Technology Park in 2005 from its previous centre in the Martutene district.
As indicated above, IKUSI's activity has focused on two areas: the first is oriented towards the engineering and integration of electronic s and the second towards the design and manufacture of electronic products.
In the former, its work has ranged from design, development, engineering, installation to commissioning and maintenance. IKUSI has managed to cover the visual, sound and data information needs of enclosures such as airports, railway and underground stations, inside train, underground or bus carriages (SAB and IFF S -On Board s and Fixed Railway Installations-) and in the supply of solutions, based on technologically advanced s, for integral security, including access control, traffic on roads and tunnels and video, voice and data communications. In 1998 it installed INFORMATION EQUIPMENT on trains at Hong Kong Airport. In 1999 it installed VIDEO INTERFONY S in thirteen railway stations in Catalonia, supplied Açominas with REMOTE CONTROL S for steel transport as well as a new remote control for CERN in Geneva. In 2001, Açominas succeeded in manufacturing the equipment for the future electronic voting ‘DEMOTEK’ as well as the SECURITY S for the airports of Palma de Mallorca and Melilla. Consequently, IKUSI's products and solutions have ranged from the installation of the first on-board information in high speed trains to the largest IP telephony network in Latin America, including the development of CRISIS ROOMS in airports, which has meant that 38 national and 34 international airports have s designed by IKUSI and the most modern public transport networks in the world have incorporated its control, information, security and/or operation s.
In the second, we find the Product Division which designs, manufactures, markets and provides the technical assistance service for its wide range of TV reception, processing and communication equipment and also remote control equipment for electrically and electro-hydraulically operated machines (TM60 and TM70 RANGE REMOTE CONTROLS). In 1993 it supplied equipment for satellite reception. In 1995 it developed an encoder for Cabledirs . In 1997 it manufactured the first DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL TELEVISION RECEIVERS designed in Spain and installed a remote management for 200 meters in Hernani. In 2000, it designed the TV CHANNEL for Metro Bilbao and the development of the Internet for EUSKALTEL. These products demonstrate IKUSI's capacity to manufacture high frequency technology equipment for TV signal reception, terrestrial and satellite reception antennas (RPA- OFFSET PARABOLIC ANTENNAS), mast amplifiers, modular head-end stations, TV modulators, autonomous broadband amplifiers, Fl-SAT distribution s, distribution passives, digital user receivers, CATV products, PPV television s for hotels and s for broadband Internet access. As a result, this equipment is enabling the reception, modulation and distribution of television signals to millions of homes and communities around the world and is helping to boost access to information and interactive convergent services.
