Fue fundado en 1419 por Fernán Pérez de Ayala. Un incendio lo destruyó en 1492 y fue vendido a la ciudad en 1549 por 1.600 ducados de oro por el conde de Salvatierra, D. Anastasio de Ayala. Dos años después fue reedificado a expensas del Municipio sirviendo de hospital hasta 1820.
