Ciudad de Costa Rica de la provincia de Punta-Arenas, entre el océano Pacifico y la provincia de Alajuela. Fue fundada por Diego Artieda Chirino en 1574. Se le denominó Esparta desde 1879 pero recuperó el nombre primitivo en las fiestas del 4.° Centenario, en 1974.
